Over at the International Interior Design Association, Meredith Landry has posted a thought-provoking piece on the evolution of interior design over the past several years.
Her basic points:
- Design is always changing – and standards, both professional and educational, seem to be keeping apace. Educators should continue modifying their approaches to ensure they’re staying up to date.
- The changes in education for interior designers are revolving around ways in which technology is becoming integrated with the field. The America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools survey found that the majority of respondents say today’s courses focus significantly more on technology than they have in the past.
- The next evolution on the technology front may be online Interior Design education. The Art Institute of Pittsburgh–Online Division recently launched an online Interior Design bachelor’s degree program, and many educators expect more schools to follow suit in the near future.
- A massive, new, focus on collaboration is changing both interior design education and the professional field.
- Many students still are leaving school relatively unprepared for the realities of both the job market and jobs. In the Design Intelligence survey, only 14 percent of respondents said more of an emphasis has been placed on professional practice in course offerings over the last five years.
We’d love to hear what’s most surprising here to you!
