As the Baby Boomers have dominated the business world over the last 40 years, GenerationXers and the Millennial’s are having problems getting their messages across to their employers and employees. A lot of the Boomers either hesitate to learn new software completely, or they make the effort and don’t know to use it.
Does this sound at all familiar?
In a world where technology is around every corner, it’s important that Boomers, Xers and Millenials come together in knowledge sharing activities to become stronger in todays workplace.
Knowledge sharing is an activity where knowledge, information, skills or expertise is exchanged within a group, family, friends, a community or an organization.
So why don’t people want to share?
“Knowledge is power.” Many hard-working individuals see their knowledge as a personal advantage.
How do we avoid this barrier?
- Hire people who will share. Recruit people that show enthusiasm and are interactive during interviews.
- Develop trust
- Show public recognition. Good efforts should always be documented such as a “wall of fame” to excel knowledge sharing in the workplace.
- Reorganize for sharing. Product teams allow social interaction and with the right staff, knowledge sharing will flourish and effectively help organizations.
- Develop leaders. These individuals promote knowledge sharing and develop training to create more knowledge sharing leaders in the workplace.
The Millennial’s have never known a world where they couldn’t Google. Boomers need to accept that younger generations have knowledge that will allow a company to move forward and invite them to the table to create great things for the future.
