Decorating a room with white walls doesn’t have to be boring – in fact, it’s a very common need, and one that lends itself to a number of design patterns and strategies. All of them will revolve around the idea that the room can’t just be white – but that repainting isn’t the only possible tactic to make a space look great!
There are a bunch of possible strategies, and any of these, if applied consistently throughout a space, can be quite effective:
Use a “pop” of bright color
It’s important that you don’t use this bright color just once in the room. Instead, use the same color multiple times, and do this with up to two colors. This color combination: white walls and at least a few bright pops of color – often comes off as modern, bright, cheerful, and new (yes, the image below happens to have a small accent wall, but the concept works the same regardless).
Use dark, earthy tones to contrast
If you have white walls and no accent color, then you’ll want to use contrast in the floor, furniture, or wall art. That means dark and brown tones. This strategy can result in a space that looks aged (like fine wine), prestigious, or powerful.
Use natural tones with plants
Watch any episode of Fixer Upper, and this is what you’ll see – white walls, often with a bit of texture, with the addition of bright, natural colors and plants. This strategy looks fresh and clean, and is quite simple – don’t allow large colors except the following: white, offwhite, natural (particuarly green and wood textures), with dark accents. Other colors that appear in the space should generally be muted. The green/white/natural contrast is what’s key here.
